Dry
mouth also know as xerostomia is a oral disorder which affects a lot
of people. The most affected from dry mouth are the elderly
population. Dry mouth can be experienced when there is less saliva in
our mouth, speaking can be difficult, pain in the mouth and
swallowing is difficult. Eating certain foods like toast and crackers
can cause a dry feeling throughout the day.
This
dental disorder usually occurs during the aging process, but the most
common causes are side effects of medications or some medical
problems. Some medical conditions include depression, diabetes,
hypertension, head and neck cancers and alcoholism. There are many
types of medications that can cause dry mouth and some experts have
rated this high as a potential to create this problem. Some of the
drug categories that can cause dry mouth are antipsychotics,
antihistamines, antidepressants and decongestants.
Whatever
the reason might be, you can experience difficulty in various
aspects, sometimes severe conditions that can impact your quality of
life. In addition to this, dry mouth can also cause oral health
issues. Saliva plays an important role in maintaining a normal pH
level as well as limiting the growth of bacteria that can cause bad
breath and tooth decay. Saliva also acts as a natural lubricant in
the mouth which makes it easier for chewing, swallowing and digesting
foods. Therefore, lack of saliva can impact your nutrition if you are
not able to eat properly and because of this you are at a higher risk
to prone to oral infections and tooth decay.
Although
having dry mouth is an uncomfortable condition, there are many things
that can give you a temporary relief as well as a more long-term
basis. First, you have to determine what is causing the dry mouth and
then relevant remedies can be tried.
If
medication is the reason for xerostomia, then your doctor can adjust
the dosage or change the medicine that has no side effects. You have
to take enough water to stay hydrated especially when the weather is
too hot or cold. Chewing gums can help to stimulate saliva
production. Habits like smoking and alcohol should be avoided if you
are suffering from xerostomia.
If
you have dry mouth you have to take extra care to your teeth as
saliva can prevent tooth decay. Without much saliva your teeth cannot
fight against tooth decay and can in turn affect the overall health.
If you have tried all the home remedies and still facing the issue,
it is recommended that you visit a dentist so that they can treat you
with advanced dental care.
